Tomozo Sakura (Sakura Tomozou, さくら 友蔵) is a character and the paternal grandfather of Sakiko and Momoko Sakura in the Japanese manga and anime series Chibi Maruko Chan.

He is the paternal grandfather to Maruko and Sakiko, the father of Hiroshi Sakura, the father-in-law of Sumire Sakura and husband to Kotake.

Appearance[]

Tomozo is the only bald family member, and has a slightly darker tan compared to the other female members, almost matching to his son's own.

He frequently wears a grey-blue long-sleeve shirt and dark green pants with black shoes. In the summer, his long-sleeve shirt is switched with a short-sleeved version.

Personality[]

Tomozo has a rather approachable demeanor, and contributes often to family discussions, sometimes drawing upon his own past experiences as a child. He is also prone to causing embarrassment for the family in moments where he makes awkward statements or actions, sometimes to further embarrassment from other family members, friends or strangers.

He is quite sensitive to some of the things that others may say; there are notable times when he sinks into a quick depression or state of shock after hearing something absurd that Maruko mentions to him, earning awkward stares from other present characters.

He is often unwittingly used as a pawn by Maruko so she can get food, treats, and sometimes pocket money from him. In one episode, Maruko plans on running away from home and almost allows Tomozo to accompany her so he can pay bus fares for her (this is prevented when Hiroshi teases Maruko about running away from home with another family member).

Tomozo's mood can sometimes swing precipitously when Maruko rejects him going somewhere with her or when Maruko is in a sad or angry mood and does not want his consoling. Tomozo's dejection during these times is equaled by his elation when Maruko is kind to him and says that he is the best. Usually, Maruko is using him as she says this.

Hobbies & Talents[]

Tomozo enjoys the company of his family, and especially Maruko, in times where she lightens his mood with imaginative thoughts and dream-like scenarios which often show the both of them together. He can sometimes be seen playing Go, a traditional Japanese board game.

He is also known for his haikus, which he writes based on current emotions felt following moments of either sheer joy or shock/sadness, calling them 'Haiku of the Heart' (Kokoro no Haiku, 心の俳句).

Relationships[]

Family[]

  • Maruko : His younger granddaughter. He loves her and spoils her very much. In one episode, Tomozo defends her against Hiroshi's harsh words and comforted her, letting her sleep with him that one night. He always sad when Maruko is sad, and is worried for her whenever he sees Maruko in trouble.
  • Hiroshi : Hiroshi is his son. Seems that they both have a normal father-son relationship.
  • Sumire : His daughter-in-law. He is often reminded and advised by Sumire not to spoil Maruko too much.
